Wooden pirate ship model kits

A list of available pirate ship model kits built from wood. Pirate ship kits from Mamoli, Mantua, Corel, OcCra, Amati, and a free paper Wicked Wench.

There are a number of wooden pirate ship model kits available. Wooden models tend to be bigger than plastic kits and definitely more difficult to build. You’ll need more tools and sanding and painting is mandatory.

Mini-Mamoli Captain Morgan

This is an easy to build wooden kit with a pre-carved solid block hull. The kit is 1:135 scale which makes a ship model 11 3/4 inches (300mm) long. This is a good kit for a wood kit beginner.

One of the better looking pirate ship model kits - Amati's "Adventure".

Amati pirate ship "Adventure"

Amati attributes this ship to the famous pirate Edward England. What grounds they have for that claim is to me unknown.

This is none the less a decent looking schooner, even if the hull shape (especially the stem) looks a little too sharp for this era.

The kit is double plank on bulkhead construction, which has become standard for this kind of kits. Good for intermediate builders. The rig should be somewhat easier that brigs and full-rigged ship models to contend with.

The scale is 1:60 so finished it will be 30 3/4 (760mm) inches long.

OcCre pirate ship "Corsair Brigantine"

This is a brig, not a brigantine if you’re picky. Just like the Adventure, this kit is double plank on bulkhead construction. Certainly not for the absolute beginner, but may be appropriate as a second or third wooden kit. It’s not a bad looking ship either.

The pirate ship is at 1:80 scale and will measure 31 3/4 inches (800mm) long and 24 inches (610mm) tall when finished.

Mantua Black Falcon - 18th Century Brig

This is an ugly ship model. I really don't like it. Not only that, Mantua is trying to pass it off as Captain Kidd’s ship, which is untrue. Captain Kidd’s ship was named Adventure Galley and his two named prizes Adventure Prize and Rouparelle. The kit is plank on bulkhead and in 1:100 Scale. Please, save your money.

Privateer "Fair American"

Wooden privateer ship model kits

A number of manufacturers make model kits of privateers. The historical accuracy is generally a lot better than the pirate ship models mentioned earlier.

They were often purpose-built and therefore documented. In addition, as the Royal Navy captured American and French privateers, they measured them and "took their lines". Those drawings and plans are often still available from the National Maritime Museum (NMM) in the UK.

A note about Model Shipways kits: I’m very impressed with the quality of their kits. I’d say they are a step above the others listed. If you can afford it, it'll be well worth it.

Corel, French privateer "Le Tonnant"

Mamoli, American privateers "Rattlesnake" and "Black Prince"

Model Shipways Privateer Ship Model Kits:

American privateer "Rattlesnake", "Armed Virginia Sloop", "Prince de Neufchatel", "Fair American"

Paper pirate ship model kits

I’ve only found one so far, but the best part: it’s free! It is the Wicked Wench from the Pirates of the Caribbean fame.
